A Quandary of best career choice which is faced by students!
“What you do today determines who you’ll be tomorrow” by John Spence, a self-explanatory quote which says how vital the varieties and the doings of the present determine your entire future, inclusive of one’s course. Being exposed to multiple career preferences and not having the access to them are two things that most of the students face in the current scenario.
When does one worry about their career options?
It is at 15 and 16, which is when you are in their end of 9th grade and during their 10th grade, one gets perplexed if we unveil them to diverse lines and streams of careers. If seen from the perspective of a student, in their teens, you are prey to familiar terms such as peer pressure, less access to career options, weak vision of their skills, feeble or no proper guidelines, e.t.c. Such students find it strenuous when proposed to make a career choice out of hundreds of them.
Does one face it?
Well yes, “I am a student giving my 10th, when asked what do I want to engage in after 10th and where I see myself in the next 5 years, it baffled me. Until yesterday I was affirmative that I should engage in business administration, master it and find a good job in the forthcoming. But what I didn’t realize is my skills and passion for creative write ups. I never once realized it could be a stream that I could seek. I fell prey to peer pressure and was determined that in order to get somewhere I had to choose the best career option available, even if I lacked interest in it. What I didn’t acknowledge was the hobby of writing once, could be my future.”
Most of us students lack proper career counseling once you reach a definite age and are ardent to strive for a course that can only benefit them in getting a safe amount of wage in the forthcoming, but no interest gains.
Should or has anyone taken any initiative in helping pupils to have a better acknowledgment?
Not everyone has proper access to expensive career counseling and an easy acknowledgement of their devotion and skills. It is important for all the schools to conduct career counseling programs; it is beneficial to most of the high school graduates, and easier for them to detect their interest in the courses in which you could satisfy your inner selves, not the society.
Why should you follow your desire, your true passion?
One needs to explore and learn new concepts in order to discover their real deal. Choosing a career would require them in building the right decisions, seeking the correct advice from the mentors, inspiration from events surrounding them and remaining motivated. One shall plan to strike what they are passionate about. If an individual is determined to seek for a course, regardless of having no interest in it just because you think it pays well because of the financial concerns in their family, then you are on the wrong path. It is always an excellent choice to stick to the courses you are passionate about and are interested in because, when decisions are taken due to anxiety and pressure, there would be chances of commitment issues in the future job.
But what if you want to follow your passion but are still contemplating?
Well as forementioned, we are unaware of many career streams. There are abundant of them, with each one being inter related to them. A newly introduced career to many, ‘Liberal Education’ can certainly be also one of the things you can take into consideration while being unsure about what major to choose. The name Liberal education itself gives you an idea of the course giving us a liberty of choosing a major according to our preference. One gets to freely choose their preferred majors and minors when they take Liberal education. Choosing majors and minors of your preference can benefit in giving clear air after a period of time. It becomes hassle free for one to choose a final major at the end of having a good exposure to two different career options; for eg: as a major you choose Psychology(your profitable passion), and as a minor you choose Theatre(a passion in which you desire to make a future but are unsure of success) ; this exposure brings out a clear aim you want to pursue in future and helps you build confidence. And then it finally becomes filtered for you to choose your final major.
Who is a career counselor and what do they do ?
Well, liberal education was just an example of what you can choose. But if you confirm about choosing just one major they’d like to ace and do not want the burden on their shoulders of two different things then what are you waiting for ? GO! Break your manacles and choose a course you like! Take the guidance of a career counselor. It does not harm you to ask questions about career options. However, many of you still don’t know what a career counselor is. So let me tell you. A career counselor is basically a person who will help you in the long run of studying until you finally start earning a good amount of survival income in your preferred course. And
No people, a career counselor is not a counselor who treats your mental health, so it would be great for your own self if you understand the difference between the two. Career counselors make sure to understand you, your interests and your persona. Accordingly, they will also ensure to take multiple tests like psychometrics and aptitude tests and many more, to make sure that whatever you choose will be according to something you like and are not compelled by anyone for it to be coerced on you.
Can you discern between your passion and a profitable passion?
Imagine yourself working into a packed cubicle from 9 to 5 pm, doing a job that you are least bothered about, you are not only neglecting the fact that you are no longer interested in the stream in which you’re working it but as well obstructing your creativity. This is not only demotivating but also stops you from getting indulged in any new thing. I get it, that when you see people around you living a perfect life, being financially stable, having easy access to all the luxuries may tempt you in pursuing a career which would help you in getting a job that pays really well, but what about choosing a career in which you are really fervid about, you may never know you follow your dreams and excel it. You can also live a perfect life. You need to stop envying others because life’s too short for that.
